CHM 15k - advanced developments

The cloud height sensor CHM 15k Nimbus underwent several improvements during the last few months. Thereby we focused on the enhancement of user friendliness regarding two fields of application. We would like to explain which changes will be implemented with the firmware update.

1) Aerosol analysis applications
- Firmware: the Aerosol Layer Height (ALH) algorithm was adapted to get better results when determining aerosol profiles with low signal-noise-ratio.
- Web interface: In the web interface ALH values can be viewed directly (see viewer tab). To monitor aerosol layers at several places (e.g. within an air quality measurement network) in real time, this can be an advantage.
- Tilt adapter: the use of adapters to tilt the CHM 15k can lead to significantly higher measurement accuracy. Besides the 15° adapter also a 5° adapter is available.

2) Airport applications
- Battery: the CHM series can be equipped with an internal battery solution to compensate short-term power losses. Thereby the device operation can continue for 1-2 more hours.
- Firmware: To customize the device to airport requirements, the measurement range can be decreased from 15,000m to 8,000m, to exclude irrelevant results from higher measurement areas.
- measurement data telegrams were adapted and supplemented in order to correspond to usual formats (incl. METAR)
- Color: The cloud height meters are also available in red-gray from now on.

3) All applications
- the process to determine the geometric overlap functions was improved. This positively affects both the detection of low cloud layers and the determination of aerosol layers.
