MARWIS Mobile Sensor Makes Tahiti Airport Safer

Faa'a Airport is the international airport of French Polynesia on the island of Tahiti. It is named after the municipality of Faa'a and is located 5 km southwest of Papeete - the capital of French Polynesia. The airport was built mainly on regenerated land on coral reefs directly off the coast with quite limited space. The airport, which is operated by Setil Aéroports, has only one runway with a length of 3,420 m (11,220 ft), on which aircraft up to the size of a Boeing 747 or an Airbus A380 can land.

The pictures show a track control vehicle equipped with the mobile road sensor MARWIS, which checks the road condition before take-offs and landings. Between December and February, tropical Tahiti is in a rainy season. Especially during this time it is important to measure the water film heights in order to be able to better estimate the braking distances of the landing aircraft.

MARWIS - Mobile Advanced Road Weather Information Sensor

MARWIS is the first road and runway weather sensor detecting road conditions, temperatures, friction and other parameters mobile and in real time from driving vehicles.

MARWIS is the first road and runway weather sensor detecting road conditions, temperatures, friction and other parameters mobile in real time for vehicles.

  • Road condition (dry, moist, wet, ice, snow, slush, chemically wet), road surface temperature, ambient temperature, water film height up to 6mm, dew point temperature, relative humidity, ice percentage, friction (calculated)
  • Optical LED transmitters, photo receivers, pyrometer, infrared
  • Mobile, plug and play, 100 measurements per second with max. output rate of 10Hz, multifunctional, real time thermal mapping, wireless data transfer
  • Bluetooth, RS485, CAN-Bus
